Hello, Mustang families!

I am so excited to be back at Midway Elementary and can’t wait to begin an amazing school year! This year marks my 24th year in education, and I truly can’t imagine doing anything else. Teaching has always been my passion, and I feel incredibly blessed to spend each day helping children learn, grow, and discover their potential.

After teaching kindergarten at Midway for four wonderful years, I spent the last four years as an RTI Interventionist at Carolina Springs Elementary in Lexington School District One. During that time, I completed two years of intensive, hands-on training to become a district Reading Specialist. The experience deepened my understanding of how children learn to read and strengthened my belief that early literacy and strong math foundations are the building blocks for lifelong success. There is nothing more rewarding than helping students gain the confidence they need to become successful readers, mathematicians, and learners.

One of the greatest honors of my career was being named Midway Elementary’s Teacher of the Year for the 2019–2020 school year and representing Midway as a Top 10 Teacher of the Year finalist for Lexington School District One. Throughout my career, I have taught k-2 as a classroom teacher and k-5 as an interventionist. I am looking forward to starting my fifth year as an interventionist. 

Around school, you’ll probably hear students call me “Mrs. Livi!” That’s a nickname a former Midway Mustang gave me years ago, and it stuck! It has become a special reminder of the relationships we build with our students, and I love that it has followed me back home to Midway.

When I’m not at school, you’ll most likely find me at the lake, relaxing at the beach, or cheering on my son, Brooks, at the baseball field as he begins his senior year of high school. My husband, Pat, and I also love spending time with our two spoiled pups, Beaux-jangles, our Shih Tzu, and Millie, our Havapoo.

I am so grateful to be back at Midway and look forward to partnering with our families to help every child grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Here’s to a year filled with learning, laughter, and lots of reasons to celebrate!

This is my 20th year teaching and having fun with kids.  I have enjoyed 10 years here at Midway. I have loved watching kids grow, learn, and explore new things throughout my time as an educator.

I have a degree from Columbia College in Elementary Education. I am certified in both Early Childhood and Elementary Education. I also have a master’s degree in Divergent Learning from Columbia College and hold my National Board Certification in Early Childhood. 

Outside of school, I love to spend time with my family. I am married and have two boys. One of my boys attends River Bluff and the other graduated from RB in 2022. We spend much of our time at the baseball field with my youngest as he plays for RB. Go Gators! I also love spending time with my sweet Cockapoo. She is my one and only girl!

I cannot wait to continue working with our parents and students toward our vision to "guide all students to learn, grow, and excel." Go Mustangs!

Melissa Mixon

I have been an educator for 23 years. I have been a teacher of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade, as well as a literacy coach and an interventionist. I have been a Midway Mustang for the last 19 years. I have my undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of South Carolina (GO GAMECOCKS!).  I have certifications in early childhood, elementary, and education administration. 

I have a daughter in middle school and a son in preschool.  We have 1 dog and 2 rabbits. I enjoy spending time on the lake, reading, and time with friends and family. I love teaching and learning. I know that even the most challenging of times can teach us powerful lessons about ourselves and the world. It's our job to watch, listen, and learn. All students can learn, just not in the same way or on the same day.
